    An integrated theory of language production and comprehension

    Currently, production and comprehension are regarded as quite distinct in accounts of language processing. In rejecting this dichotomy, we instead assert that producing and understanding are interwoven, and that this interweaving is what enables people to predict themselves and each other. We start by noting that production and comprehension are forms of action and action perception. We then consider the evidence for interweaving in action, action perception, and joint action, and explain such evidence in terms of prediction. Specifically, we assume that actors construct forward models of their actions before they execute those actions, and that perceivers of others' actions covertly imitate those actions, then construct forward models of those actions. We use these accounts of action, action perception, and joint action to develop accounts of production, comprehension, and interactive language. Importantly, they incorporate well-defined levels of linguistic representation (such as semantics, syntax, and phonology). We show (a) how speakers and comprehenders use covert imitation and forward modeling to make predictions at these levels of representation, (b) how they interweave production and comprehension processes, and (c) how they use these predictions to monitor the upcoming utterances. We show how these accounts explain a range of behavioral and neuroscientific data on language processing and discuss some of the implications of our proposal

    Theoretical studies of radiation effects in composite materials for space use

    Tetraglycidyl 4,4'-diamino diphenyl methane epoxy cured with diamino diphenyl sulfone was used as a model compound. Computer programs were developed to calculate (1) energy deposition coefficients of protons and electrons of various energies at different depths of the material; (2) ranges of protons and electrons of various energies in the material; and (3) cumulative doses received by the composite in different geometric shapes placed in orbits of various altitudes and inclination. A preliminary study on accelerated testing was conducted and it was found that an elliptical equitorial orbit of 300 km perigee by 2750 km apogee can accumulate, in 2 years or less, enough radiation dose comparable to geosynchronous environment for 30 years. The local plasma model calculated the mean excitation energies for covalent and ionic compounds. Longitudinal and lateral distributions of excited species by electron and proton impact as well as the probability of overlapping of two tracks due to two charged particles within various time intervals were studied

    The programming new e+e−e^{+}e^- collider with high luminosity shall provide another useful platform to study the properties of the doubly heavy BcB_c meson in addition to the hadronic colliders as LHC and TEVATRON. Under the `New Trace Amplitude Approach', we calculate the production of the spin-singlet BcB_c and the spin-triplet Bc∗B^*_c mesons through the Z0Z^0 boson decays, where uncertainties for the production are also discussed. Our results show Γ(1S0)=81.4−40.5+102.1\Gamma_{(^1S_0)}= 81.4^{+102.1}_{-40.5} KeV and Γ(3S1)=116.4−62.8+163.9\Gamma_{(^3S_1)}=116.4^{+163.9}_{-62.8} KeV, where the errors are caused by varying mbm_b and mcm_c within their reasonable regions.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables.     Transonic airfoil analysis and design in nonuniform flow

    A nonuniform transonic airfoil code is developed for applications in analysis, inverse design and direct optimization involving an airfoil immersed in propfan slipstream. Problems concerning the numerical stability, convergence, divergence and solution oscillations are discussed. The code is validated by comparing with some known results in incompressible flow. A parametric investigation indicates that the airfoil lift-drag ratio can be increased by decreasing the thickness ratio. A better performance can be achieved if the airfoil is located below the slipstream center. Airfoil characteristics designed by the inverse method and a direct optimization are compared. The airfoil designed with the method of direct optimization exhibits better characteristics and achieves a gain of 22 percent in lift-drag ratio with a reduction of 4 percent in thickness

    An improved version of Woodward's chord plane aerodynamic panel method for subsonic and supersonic flow is developed for cambered wings exhibiting edge separated vortex flow, including those with leading edge vortex flaps. The exact relation between leading edge thrust and suction force in potential flow is derived. Instead of assuming the rotated suction force to be normal to wing surface at the leading edge, new orientation for the rotated suction force is determined through consideration of the momentum principle. The supersonic suction analogy method is improved by using an effective angle of attack defined through a semi-empirical method. Comparisons of predicted results with available data in subsonic and supersonic flow are presented

    Production of the PP-Wave Excited BcB_c-States through the Z0Z^0 Boson Decays

    In Ref.[7],we have dealt with the production of the two color-singlet SS-wave (cbˉ)(c\bar{b})-quarkonium states Bc(∣(cbˉ)1[1S0]>)B_c(|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1S_0]>) and Bc∗(∣(cbˉ)1[3S1]>)B^*_c(|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^3S_1]>) through the Z0Z^0 boson decays. As an important sequential work, we make a further discussion on the production of the more complicated PP-wave excited (cbˉ)(c\bar{b})-quarkonium states, i.e. ∣(cbˉ)1[1P1]>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1P_1]> and ∣(cbˉ)1[3PJ]>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^3P_J]> (with J=(1,2,3)J=(1,2,3)). More over, we also calculate the channel with the two color-octet quarkonium states ∣(cbˉ)8[1S0]g>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 8}[^1S_0]g> and ∣(cbˉ)8[3S1]g>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 8}[^3S_1]g>, whose contributions to the decay width maybe at the same order of magnitude as that of the color-singlet PP-wave states according to the naive nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics scaling rules. The PP-wave states shall provide sizable contributions to the BcB_c production, whose decay width is about 20% of the total decay width ΓZ0→Bc\Gamma_{Z^0\to B_c}. After summing up all the mentioned (cbˉ)(c\bar{b})-quarkonium states' contributions, we obtain ΓZ0→Bc=235.9−122.0+352.8\Gamma_{Z^0\to B_c} =235.9^{+352.8}_{-122.0} KeV, where the errors are caused by the main uncertainty sources.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables. basic formulae in the appendix are cut off to match the published version, which can be found in v1. to be published in Eur.Phys.J.

    There will be six facility instruments on the NASA NPOP-1 and NPOP-2 and additional instruments on the Japanese and European satellites. Also, there are the 24 selected NASA instruments that may be flown on one of the platforms. Many of these instruments can provide data that could be very useful for real-time data studies in the snow and ice area. Any one instrument is not addressed in particular, but emphasis is placed on what is potentially possible using the capabilities of some of these instruments
